The Esterházy family’s private collection can deservedly be counted among the most important aristocratic treasuries of the Baroque period, and it is the only Hungarian aristocratic collection of this period which survived the vicissitudes of later centuries largely intact. The collection was housed for almost 3 centuries in the treasury of the castle of Fraknó (now: Forchtenstein, Austria), where part of it still remains. The majority of the collection is today preserved at the Museum of Applied Arts in Budapest (Iparművészeti Múzeum). The Museum of Applied Arts, together with the Esterházy Privatstiftung of Eisenstadt, for the first time present the two parts of the collection in this joint exhibition. It features about 130 objects including goldsmith works, jewellery and ceremonial weapons, luxurious textiles and costumes, as well as large-scale portraits of Esterházy family members. Most of the works on display were made in the 16th and 17th centuries, and their creators were among the masters of European Mannerist and Baroque decorative arts.
